Anadarko’s Keith Tillis- Athlete Spotlight- Presented by Samantha Wallis Shelter Insurance

As a freshman at Anadarko High School, Keith Tillis is already building a reputation as a hard-working, coachable athlete with a competitive drive that reaches far beyond one sport. Tillis participates in cross country, football, basketball, baseball and track, embracing every opportunity to compete while also maintaining straight A’s in the classroom.

Basketball is one of the sports where Tillis takes on a major leadership role. Playing both point guard and shooting guard, he enjoys creating opportunities for teammates while also being ready to make a play when the game is on the line. One of the defining moments of his young athletic career came during a game against Elgin City, when Tillis hit a buzzer-beater to secure the win.

“That was probably the highlight moment of my career so far,” Tillis said.

His goals stretch well beyond high school. Tillis is motivated by the possibility of playing at the next level and, one day, making a career out of the sport he loves. He knows reaching that level will demand consistency, sacrifice and a willingness to keep working when nobody is watching.

“It takes hard work, no matter what,” Tillis said.

Tillis credits his father as his biggest influence. He has watched the sacrifices his dad has made for their family, and that example motivates Tillis to bring the same level of effort to athletics, academics and life. He also appreciates Mr. Davis, a teacher whose confidence and willingness to be himself have made a lasting impression.

On the court, Tillis enjoys competing against teammate Manny Cervantes in practice. The friendly competition pushes both players to improve, while Tillis also recognizes the value of teammates whose contributions may not always show up on the stat sheet. He singled out small forward Josiah Wallace as a player who does the “dirty work” necessary for the team to succeed.

Anadarko’s rivalry game against Chickasha is another matchup Tillis especially enjoys. Rivalry games bring extra energy, and Tillis takes pride in competing for a school and community that care deeply about their teams.

“It makes me feel great to be able to represent a team with so much passion as Anadarko,” Tillis said.

Away from sports, Tillis is involved in Spanish Club, Indian Club and 4-H. Balancing those activities, five sports and demanding schoolwork requires discipline and smart use of time, qualities Tillis believes will continue to help him chase his long-term goals.
